A $1.645 billion housing plan has been unveiled by the Northern Territory government. The Better Remote Homes program aims to build at least 240 houses a year over the span of eight years in the state’s remote communities.

In collaboration with the current $350 million National Partnership on Remote Housing project, the Better Remote Homes program will commence from 2018-19 and aims to build 2087 houses in remote communities by 2026. This program will include associated planning and road construction as well as bring essential services such as water, electricity and sewerage.

The National Partnership on Remote Housing – funded by the Federal Government – has already committed to build 380 new houses as well as deliver over 1,000 upgrades for the next two years.

“These programs are worth almost $2 billion and amount to the Territory’s biggest funding commitment to remote housing since self-government 38 years ago.” – Chief Minister Adam Giles

The Better Remote Homes program is funded by the Federal and Northern Territory governments as well as philanthropic and private sectors.
