The Queensland Government is making an investment of approximately $1.8 billion to build over 5,000 new homes, which will create thousands of construction and building jobs for the region. The new 10-year Queensland Housing Strategy will be providing Queenslanders with a safe as well as secure and affordable homes.

According to Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, this housing strategy will see the State take the lead in delivering affordable and social housing in the country.

“Housing is fundamentally about people and our $1.8 billion investment puts people first.

“Secure housing enables young people to finish their education. It provides the stability that keeps families together. And it gives people the secure base they need to get and keep a job,” the Premier said.

Through the 10-year Housing Strategy, the State Government will:

  • Build 4,522 new social homes and 1,034 affordable homes
  • Support 450 full-time construction jobs a year
  • Introduce inclusionary requirements for new dwellings on state land (5-20% for social and affordable)
  • Invest $20 million to construct new Youth Foyers in Townsville and on the Gold Coast and expand the existing Foyer in Logan
  • Commit $75 million to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander home ownership
  • Invest $30 million to reform the housing system
  • Create housing and homelessness hubs to improve service delivery
  • Strengthen consumer protections for retired people

Treasurer Curtis Pitt said that on top of this major investment, the new housing strategy will also herald a new way of doing business in the region.

“This is about best practice procurement, working to match projects to appropriate partners, creating opportunities for small, medium and large businesses.

“Whether you are a small home builder or one of the State’s largest developers there is something in this construction package for you,” Mr Pitt said.

According to Minister for Housing and Public Works Mick de Brenni, the construction program under the Queensland Housing Strategy was focused on creating local jobs and partnerships.

“This strategy is about partnering with the private sector and community housing providers to create genuine affordable housing, something that hasn’t been done at scale in this country in decades.

“And this strategy is a big win for local builders and tradies in the residential sector across the State,” Mr de Brenni said.
