$100m of critical works in the Goulburn-Murray District this winter

As part of the Connections Project- Victoria’s largest water modernisation project, the Andrews Labor Government has announced $100 million of critical works in the Goulburn-Murray District.

The works scheduled to be carried out this winter will:

  • Upgrade 33 kilometres of channel across 17 sites
  • Undertake work of more than 500 metres of outlets
  • Install 35 kilometres of pipeline across seven sites
  • Install automation of 271 sites

Through recent review, it has been revealed that the project is not delivering benefits to the local community and environment due to slipping behind schedule under the former Liberal and National Government.

From this, the current Labour Government has redesigned the project with the help of local irrigators, the Victorian Farmers Federation and the local community to ensure the project gets back on track and delivers water savings within the budget.

This project provides major investment in local jobs and infrastructure for the region. An additional $10 million will be invested by Goulburn Murray Water (GMW) as part of the Connections Project, in the core works program over the winter period.

As a result of this project, farming businesses and more irrigators benefit from the modernised delivery network and a better productivity from the automated water delivery system. This project delivers water savings through upgrades instead of buy-backs for the environment.

“The winter works program is an important part of the overall Reset Delivery Plan and is a culmination of the significant planning effort by the Connections project team.” Project Control Chair Mike Walsh said.

“The $2 billion Connections Project is modernising the network, delivering water more efficiently, encouraging farm efficiency and generating water savings that supports local jobs.” Minister for Water Lisa Neville said.
