$12m upgrade package announced for VIC's South Yarra Station

The South Yarra Station in Victoria is set for an upgrade, with the Victorian Budget committing approximately $12.33 million for the project.

The upgrade will include widening the station entrance on Toorak Road as well as redesign the layout of the station, providing a larger, more efficient and accessible space for commuters. The works on South Yarra Station will also help reduce queuing, making entry and exit smoother and faster.

Opposite the train station, the tram stops will be upgraded as well to allow people with disability to move safely between the tram stop to the South Yarra Station.

With the $11 billion Metro Tunnel project, the City Loop is expected to have more space to run more trains which is projected to have a 48 per cent increase in passenger capacity on the Sandringham line. Once the project is completed, the Sandringham line will be able to carry approximately 72,000 passengers during peak hours each week.

These works will ensure that South Yarra will continue to enjoy high-frequency services, with trains every 2 minutes during peak hours. This will greatly benefit Prahran, Windsor and South Yarra Station passengers.

“These works, combined with the metro Tunnel, will mean less queues and more trains for South Yarra Station to get people home faster and more comfortably,” Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan said.

Planning works on the South Yarra Station upgrade are underway to investigate options for a fully accessible station as well as additional station access points, improved cycling facilities and improved long-term integration with the community surrounding the station.

The Victorian Government will be consulting with the City of Stonnington as well as local residents and businesses regarding the design of the South Yarra Station and tram stop upgrades. The State Government will also consult about the long-term development options for the station.

Project planning for the upgrades will commence immediately, and major construction works are projected to begin by mid-2019. The South Yarra Station and tram stop upgrades are expected to be completed by the end of 2019.
