$18m Rio Tinto mine expansion to create jobs in Pilbara

The WA Government has given Rio Tinto the thumbs-up to extend their Western Turner Syncline (WTS) mine in the Pilbara, near Tom Price.

“The Western Turner Syncline production capacity is currently 25 million tonnes to 30 million tonnes per year.

“The approval will ensure Rio Tinto can maintain this level of production by bringing new sources online,” said State Development Minister Bill Marmion.

According to State Development Minister Bill Marmion, the expansion project is expected to cost up to $18 million and at least 40 jobs will be created during the construction phase.

Works included in the approval will involve the development of deposits to the north and west of the existing mining site. Associated works for this project will include the construction of haul roads, storage areas and access sites as well as water treatment facilities.

“This is great news for resources and great news for Western Australian jobs.

“The development proposal was approved under a State Agreement and clearly shows these agreements ensure WA remains an attractive place for investment and continued development,” Minister Marmion said.
