Thiess, CIMIC Group’s mining services provider, has been awarded a $190 million contract extension from Anglo American, a global mining business, to continue providing mining service in Queensland’s Bowen Basin at Dawson South.
Thiess will continue to deliver coal mining, overburden removal and run of mine rehandling services throughout the 36-month extension.
Thiess has extensive history with the Dawson Mine, starting back in 1962 with the original joint venture of Thiess Peabody Mitsui Coal for the establishment and operation of what was then known as Moura Mine. From there, a joint venture between Thiess and fellow CIMIC Group company Sedgman, designed, built and commissioned the coal handling preparation plant at Dawson in 2008. Thiess resumed operations at Dawson in February 2015 where the company began undertaking the open-cut mining of the existing pit at Dawson South.
According to Michael Wright, CIMIC Group Chief Executive Officer, believes this contract extension builds on their current relationship with Anglo American.
“This contract extension builds on our long-standing relationship with Anglo American and reflects the team’s ability to create value for our clients globally. We’ve been working with Anglo at Dawson for eight years, and I’m pleased the relationship continues to prosper,” said Mr Wright.
CIMIC Group Executive Mining and Mineral Processing and Thiess Managing Director Douglas Thompson said: “We’re extremely proud of our strong performance at Dawson South. This extension recognises our team’s ability to deliver project excellence within a cost-competitive culture.”
