$1bn investment to improve Western Sydney roads

The New South Wales Government, through its 2017-18 Budget, will be investing approximately $1 billion to improve roads across Western Sydney.

This investment will include $153 million for Western Sydney growth roads such as the Narellan Road upgrade as well as the Schofields Road upgrade stage two.

“We’re cracking on with the delivery of vital arterial roads to ensure we can support residential and commercial growth and meet future traffic demand.

“By 2031 more than half of the new jobs in Sydney will be created in Western Sydney, so we’re getting ahead to ensure road users and workers are connected with jobs across the region,” Treasurer Dominic Perrottet said.

According to Minister for Roads Melinda Pavey, the projects will help pave the way for an expected spike in employment and housing over the next two decades.

“This funding will allow the continued transformation of the region’s economy and make Western Sydney an even better place to live and do business.

“Already more than 845,000 journeys to work start and end in Western Sydney, so this massive investment will enable roads to be widened, upgraded and new connections developed,” Ms Pavey said.

Minister for Western Sydney Stuart Ayres said that the Federal and State Government has made $648 million in funds available to continue upgrading and building roads that support the Western Sydney Airport at Badgerys Creek.

“The airport is already proving a catalyst for economic growth, while the road upgrades will greatly benefit residents, including by reducing local congestion.

“It includes completion of the first stage of The Northern Road between Camden Valley Way and Peter Brock Drive and the first stage of Bringelly Road between Camden Valley Way and King Street,” Mr Ayres said.

This package will also include the construction of the Bringelly Road upgrade stage two as well as The Northern Road upgrade stage two between Peter Brock Drive and Mersey Road.

Approximately $21 million has also been allocated for the planning of the M12 Motorway and up to $2 million has been set aside for the planning of the Outer Sydney Orbital.

Other key Western Sydney road projects in the 2017-18 Budget include:

  • Reducing congestion and addressing critical pinch points including the Smart Motorways program on the M4
  • Planning to upgrade Memorial Avenue
  • Riverstone traffic improvement
  • Commencing construction of the replacement Windsor Bridge over the Hawkesbury River
  • Appin Road project
