The New South Wales Government has revealed its 20-year transport plan for Wagga Wagga. This is the first of its kind for a major regional city in the State – a place-based transport plan that will transform how people and goods move within, to and through regions.
The transport plan aims to improve the daily life of families in Wagga Wagga through the delivery of a more efficient and accessible transport network.
“This plan provides a blueprint for transforming the movement of people and goods travelling within Wagga Wagga over the next two decades.
“Working with Wagga Wagga City Council and using feedback from the community, the plan lists 35 initiatives which focus on walking, cycling and public transport as attractive alternatives to driving private vehicles.
“There is also a focus on the city’s expanding industry precincts and business strengths and how the transport network can best drive economic benefits,” Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Sam Farraway said.
The final Wagga Wagga Transport Plan has been shaped by the community’s needs and wants as well as a shared vision with Council, local business and industry along with other groups and agencies.
Member for Wagga Wagga Joe McGirr said: “There was some outstanding feedback when we asked the community for its ideas and expectations to help us understand the priorities and values for Wagga Wagga’s transport network, now and into the future.
“The community feedback has been incorporated into a number of changes in the final plan, which we are now urging residents, visitors and business operators to embrace and join us on this 20-year journey.”
Transport For NSW is ensuring that Wagga Wagga’s future transport network is safe, sustainable and productive through the 20-year transport plan.
The Wagga Wagga Transport Plan has identified 35 initiatives that will help in reaching the goal of a better transport network for the region. The initiatives are separated into three themes, namely:
Transport for NSW and Wagga Wagga City Council will be sharing the responsibility for the 35 initiatives as this shared accountability is crucial to delivering the needs of the community now and into the future.
As stated in the Wagga Wagga Transport Plan web page: “The car is currently the dominant method of travel in Wagga Wagga. As the city grows, residents will need improved access to public transport, walking and cycling routes and point-to-point travel.
“The suburbs of Wagga Wagga will be places where people regularly choose to walk and cycle to shops, services, schools or work.
“Rural villages and towns surrounding Wagga Wagga will require a more diverse range of transport options to make them attractive and liveable for residents.”
