The New South Wales Government has given its approval to the development of a $24 million wave pool within the Sydney Olympic Park area.

Construction of Sydney-based URBNSurf’s wave pool is set to commence in the second half of 2018 and will take approximately 12 months to complete.

The 3.2 hectare surf park will be able to accommodate up to 80 surfers an hour in its lagoon - which will create waves up to 1.7 metres in height. The park will also feature a retail shop, café, indoor restaurant and alfresco bar as well as change rooms, a rental area, first aid quarters and lifeguard rooms. A two-storey surf academy will also be built that will have teaching and training facilities.

The surf park was designed to include a pronounced focus on sustainability as well as an “excellent design standards”. This new wave pool precinct within Sydney Olympic Park also encourages the use of non-vehicular forms of transport to and from the park.

The development will incorporate sustainable building materials as well as solar panels, on-site rainwater collection and re-use, and a green roof the will cover the main entry plaza.

Key sites and industry assessments Executive Director, Anthea Sargeant said: “This is a wonderful opportunity to give the people of western Sydney easy access to fun, healthy, outdoor recreational facilities.”

She added: “It’s an innovative proposal, offering the chance to have world-class surfing at Sydney Olympic Park in Homebush, 25 kilometres from the ocean.”

Two other URBNsurf surf parks are also in the works, one in Perth and the other in Melbourne.

The new wave pool is expected to open for surf in 2019.
