Hundreds of jobs are set to be created and improved road safety will soon be delivered across South Australia as the State Government invests $100 million towards vital road maintenance and upgrade works.

The $100 million funding allocation is part of the State Budget 2020-21 and it is set to unlock an additional $168 million from the Australian Government’s $2 billion funding for shovel-ready, small-scale safety projects included in the recent Federal Budget.

“South Australia is facing its most challenging economic period in living memory and investing in projects that will get people into jobs sooner will keep our economy firing during this extremely difficult time.

“This is another part of our plan to keep South Australia safe and strong, by creating jobs, backing business and building what matters,” Premier Steven Marshall said.

The $100 million funding will cover projects such as maintenance works on metropolitan roads, including:

  • Port Road – Grand Junction Road to East Avenue ($9 million)
  • Fullarton Road 0 Glen Osmond Road to Carrick Hill/Rundle St to The Parade ($6 million)
  • Marion Road – Richmond Road to Anzac Highway, Henley Beach Road to Sir Donald Bradman Drive ($5.5 million)
  • Anzac Highway – Marion Road to Morphett Road ($3.5 million)

According to Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Corey Wingard, some of these projects are set to begin works over the coming weeks.

“We have a series of high priority roads we want to start work on as soon as possible to bust congestion and deliver safety benefits for South Australian motorists.

“The Marshall Government is focused on getting people from A to B faster so they can spend less time sitting in traffic and more time with their families doing what they love,” Minister Wingard said.

The works above are in addition to the $59.5 million road safety stimulus funding that was announced earlier this year, which includes:

  • $10 million for Audio Tactile Line Marking along key regional road corridors
  • $10 million for installation of road-side barrier systems
  • $10 million for sealing council roads approaching sealed rural arterial roads
  • $8.5 million to improve road lighting along key regional roads and rural intersections
  • $6 million for road safety improvements on Long Valley Road, between Mt Barker and Strathalbyn
  • $5 million for shoulder sealing works along key regional roads
  • $5 million to install new median wire treatments along the Dukes Highway
  • $4 million for installation of activated safety signage on the South Eastern Freeway
  • $1 million for installation of variable speed limit signs around key safety blackspots

This funding allocation is proposed to be spent over the next two years.
