A new bulk fuel storage facility is now being built at East Arm in the Northern Territory and the $270 million project is anticipated to create up to 200 jobs during its construction phase as well as support an additional 10 jobs once it is operational.
Works on the 11 tanks at the Crowley Bulk Fuel Storage Facility are progressing well with the most advanced tank having four levels of steel strakes already in place.
Saunders International will be delivering engineering, procurement, construction and management (EPCM) services for this project, including the construction of fuel storage tanks. On the other hand, Tetra Tech Proteus has been appointed as engineer of record who will provide design services.

Once completed, the Crowley Bulk Fuel Storage Facility – built at Land Development Corporation’s future Bulk Liquids Area in the East Arm – is expected to be the largest of its kind in the Northern Territory and it will play a vital role in servicing US defence operations in the region.
Crowley, the project developer, has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Larrakia Development Corporation for the collaborative development of job training programs that will lead to full-time employment for Larrakia at the bulk fuel storage facility.
“This is an important project that not only supports critical defence work, but also supports local jobs and businesses.
“It will strengthen the Territory as a leading hub for defence and national security, because of our strategic location and capabilities.
“The Territory is the place to invest in – we are safe, stable and beaming with opportunity,” Deputy Chief Minister Nicole Manison said.
The Crowley Bulk Fuel Storage Facility will have the capacity to hold up to 300 million litres of military specification fuel, which will be used by the US Defence. The facility will provide services such as receiving, storing, protecting and shipping aviation-grade JP-5 turbine fuel and commercial grade Jet A-1 fuel for defence forces.
Construction on the new facility is due to be completed in September 2023 and will be operational shortly thereafter.
