Construction on the $280 million upgrade on Prospect Highway in New South Wales has been given the green light and Fulton Hogan has been awarded the contract to deliver the entire project.

Upgrade works on the 3.6-kilometre stretch of road will help improve safety and travel times for motorists as well as pedestrians and cyclists.

“The Morrison Government is funding the delivery of important road projects across Australia that improve congestion and safety including the Prospect Highway, which will make it easier for commuters to move around western Sydney.

“By alleviating congestion along key transport corridors like this one, we’re helping people to get home to their families sooner and safer, we’re helping freight move more quickly between our cities, and we’re generating jobs across the country,” Federal Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts Paul Fletcher MP said.

This project is jointly funded by the Australian and New South Wales Governments, with the funding from the Australian Government forming part of the $110 billion, 10-year infrastructure investment pipeline that drives economic recovery.

Key features of this multi-million-dollar project include:

  • Upgrading the highway to a four-lane divided road from an undivided two-lane road
  • Duplicating the bridges over M4 Motorway and Great Western Highway
  • A new two way link road between Great Western Highway and Prospect Highway, with traffic lights at each end of the new road
  • New traffic lights at Stoddart Road, M4 Motorway eastbound entry and exit ramps, and Reservoir Road
  • Changing access arrangements at Tudor Avenue, Roger Place, Vesuvius Street and Ponds Road
  • Upgrading the existing shared path on the western side of Prospect Highway between M4 Motorway and Blacktown Road
  • Installing a kerbside bus lane in each direction between Lancelot Street and north of St Martins Crescent
  • Providing a kiss-and-ride facility for Shelly Public School within the school grounds
  • Modifying the intersection at Hadrian Avenue and Keyworth Drive to provide a roundabout
  • Changing the posted speed limit on Prospect Highway between Reservoir Road and Blacktown Road from 60km/h to 70kn/h

“The NSW Government is committed to delivering on its promise to upgrade the Prospect Highway between Blacktown and Prospect, and is working with the Federal Government on delivering this critical road for western Sydney.

“We’ll also be building new bridges over the M4 and Great Western Highway, a pedestrian underpass between Blacktown Road and Harrod Street, and a new road connecting the Great Western Highway to the Prospect Highway.

“Public transport customers will also benefit from new bus lanes between Lancelot Street and north of St Martins Crescent, demonstrating our commitment to a multi-modal approach to road upgrades,” NSW Minister for Transport and Roads Rob Stokes MP said.

Prospect Highway is one of western Sydney’s major roads that connect to the M4 Motorway, the Great Western Highway, Old Windsor Road and the M2 Motorway. This stretch of road caters to approximately 35,000 vehicles a day, including up to 5,000 heavy vehicles.

In the coming months, Transport for NSW will be putting out more information on construction schedules.

Major construction is expected to begin in early 2022 and completed in late 2024.
