Phoenix Energy is set to commence preliminary earthworks this month on a $400 million waste-to-energy facility – Australia’s first facility of this kind – in Kwinana, Western Australia.
With the site at Leath Road ready for construction, works are expected to begin in the second quarter of 2018.
Phoenix Energy, together with its project co-sponsor Macquarie Capital, has signed an agreement with a consortium comprising of Acciona and Veolia to design, build and operate the new facility.
This project is expected to create up to 800 jobs during construction as well as 60 full-time operational positions once the facility is completed.
Phoenix Energy Managing Director, Peter Dyson said: “We are pleased to have appointed a world-class consortium to complete the plant after the initial technology supplier was unable to continue with its involvement.”
The facility, once operational, is expected to process 400,000 tonnes of waste annually and will generate approximately 40MW of energy.
“Once operational, the plant will provide consistent and dependable energy from a renewable source that will also deliver huge benefits to metropolitan Perth by reducing the waste going to landfill, reducing the valuable land that gets occupied by landfill, and reducing the emissions associated with landfill,” Mr Dyson said.
