WBHO Infrastructure has secured a $41 million contract to deliver upgrade works on the Great Northern Highway in the Kimberley region of Western Australia.

The design and construct contract will involve rebuilding and realigning the six-kilometre stretch of road between Maggie Creek and Wyndham – also known as ‘Maggies Jump Up’ – which includes the construction of a northbound passing lane.

The project will also involve reconstructing 22 kilometres of the Great Northern Highway from Maggie Creek to the Wyndham townsite, including drainage improvements.

According to Transport Minister Rita Saffioti, this upgrade will help improve reliability and safety on the Great Northern Highway which will meet the future demands of the Kimberley Region road network.

“This project will improve substandard sections of the highway which are prone to flooding and struggle to accommodate road trains carrying cattle, minerals and produce to the Port of Wyndham,” the Minister said.

In addition, Bridge No. 5116 on Weaber Plain Road will also be replaced to increase the bridge's load carrying capacity.

This $56.14 million project is jointly funded by the Australian and Western Australian Governments, each contributing $44.91 million and $11.23 million respectively.

Construction on the Great Northern Highway between Maggie Creek and Wyndham is expected to commence in April 2018 and be completed by late-2018.
