$450m Northbank Goods Shed redevelopment in VIC given the green light
Victoria’s Northbank Goods Shed precinct beside the Yarra River is set to be revitalised with property developer Riverlee given the approval to proceed with its $450 million ‘Seafarers Place’ development.
The disused industrial waterfront site is going to be revitalised with a new 5-star luxury hotel and a mixed-use precinct that will connect with the CBD and Docklands.
Seafarers Place is going to be located between Spencer Street and Charles Grimes Bridge, and the development will comprise of a 280-room hotel as well as 150 apartments ans a 1,000-seat function centre.
The operator for the new hotel has not been disclosed, but it is expected to be a “new brand” for the region.
“It’s a new brand for Melbourne. It’s quite a bit different from the brands you’ve seen. It’s not quite so traditional and it will really be a game changer,” Riverlee’s development director David Lee said.
The development will also include a 3,500-SQM public park together with works on the historic wharf and restoration of the heritage-listed crane on site.
Mr Lee added: “The open space and public park are designed to give the waterfront back to the community and celebrate the unique character and history of the site.”

Architecture for Seafarers Place was designed by Fender Katsalidis Architects, while the landscape design for the development was done by Oculus.
Riverlee acquired the state-owned Goods Shed site three years ago for approximately $28.5 million.
Once completed, Seafarers Place will restore the historic site into a premium waterfront events space for locals and visitors.
“This regeneration project is significant in many ways and has been collaboratively designed with all of our partners and important government stakeholders, including the City of Melbourne, Department of Planning, Department of Treasury and Finance, Heritage Victoria, and many others,” Mr Lee said.
Works have already commenced to restore the wharf and crane, while construction on the new hotel is expected to begin by mid-2019.
