$51m investment to upgrade intersections in Adelaide's northern suburbs

The South Australian Government will invest $51 million from the State Budget 2019-20 to deliver upgrades to three intersections in the northern suburbs to improve traffic flow on Main North and Grand Junction Roads.

The multi-million dollar investment will include:

  • $19 million to upgrade the intersection of Main North Road and Nottage Terrace
  • $13 million to upgrade the intersection of Main North, Kings and McIntyre Roads
  • $19 million to upgrade the intersection of Grand Junction, Hampstead and Briens Roads

“These are some of the most congested intersections in Adelaide northern suburbs accommodating between 58,000 and 78,000 vehicle per day and nearing operational capacity.

“Aside from being major arterial roads for the public, they are also key routes for freight traveling through to the north of the city,” Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Local Government Stephan Knoll said.

The Main North Road and Nottage Terrace intersection caters to approximately 66,000 vehicles daily, with congestion happening during peak hours. To address this, a new right-hand turn lane is proposed to be added on Main North Road as well as extending the bus lane on the northern approach on Main North Road.

On the other hand, about 78,000 vehicles pass by the Main North, Kings and McIntyre Roads intersection every day and it is a major freight, traffic and public transport route. In order to improve safety and efficiency on this intersection, extending or adding right-hand turn lanes was proposed.

In addition, there is a need to improve capacity on the Grand Junction, Hampstead and Briens Roads intersection, with around 58,000 vehicles travelling through this intersection each day and is projected to be at operational capacity by 2021.

“We’re investing $51 million in the next State Budget, in partnership with the Commonwealth Government, to build these intersections, so that South Australians spend less time stuck in traffic and have a faster and safer journey into work or home,” Mr Knoll said.

Early planning works is set to go underway immediately to determine the preferred option for each of the intersections. Early works are expected to begin within the 2019-20 financial year.
