$583m Lindeman Island Resort redevelopment in QLD given the green light

White Horse Australia Lindeman Pty Ltd has been given the green light for its $583 million redevelopment plan for the Lindeman Island Resort, located approximately 13 kilometres south east of Hamilton Island in Queensland’s Mackay region.

Approval for the development was given to the China-based developer after agreeing to a number of strict environmental conditions.

The project is expected to support up to 300 jobs on the island during construction, as well as approximately 420 direct and indirect jobs for the broader Mackay region.

The multi-million dollar project will include:

• Redeveloping and expanding the existing resort to include a 5-star beach resort, a 6-star spa resort as well as a 5-star eco resort and a 4-star tourist villa precinct
• Facilities such as a conference centre, beach club, restaurants and lounges
• A central village precinct that will comprise of restaurants, a bar, night club, conference facility buildings, arrival centre, shops, sport and recreation centre and a staff village
• Expansion of the current service area, including power generation (solar with diesel back-up), sewage treatment and water treatment
• Upgrades to the existing airstrip and golf course
• Upgrades to the existing jetty and additional moorings
• Ecotourism facilities such as a National Park and Great Barrier Reef Educational Centre
• Proposed environmental enhancements including native vegetation replanting, improvements to stormwater management and a shift towards renewable energy sources

According to Minister for State Development Cameron Dick, the first stage of the redevelopment is expected to contribute about $480 million to the Mackay region as well as $620 million to the Queensland economy.

“This project has the potential to deliver $100 million in value-adding to the local economy each year once it’s completed.

“This sort of investment is a real signal that we’re open for business, we’re open for investment, and we want our tourism and other industries to grow in Queensland,” Mr Dick said.

Once operational, the resort will be able to accommodate up to 550 guests a night.

Construction is expected to commence in 2019 and completed by 2022.
