After a rigorous Environmental Effects Statement (EES) process, the Victorian Government has given the green light to the development of the Kentbruck Green Power Hub near Nelson in the State’s south west.
The 600MW wind farm will have up to 105 turbines and have the capacity to generate about 2,000GWh of affordable renewable energy annually, which is enough to power approximately 380,000 homes.
The proposed project site is located about 5 kilometres from Nelson and 25 kilometres from Portland.
This project is expected to create about 350 jobs during its construction and 14 ongoing roles once the wind farm is operational. Kentbruck Green Power Hub will also be supporting the continued operation of one of the region’s largest employers, the Portland Aluminium Smelter.
“This wind farm will deliver cheaper, cleaner power for hundreds of thousands of homes across Victoria.
“We’re getting on with helping deliver cleaner and cheaper energy projects, while also ensuring that environmental standards remain strong and safeguards are put in place,” Acting Minister for Planning Gabrielle Williams said.
“This wind farm will deliver more affordable, reliable energy for Victorian households by boosting renewable energy supply, we’re helping families keep their power bills down while securing our energy future,” Minister for Energy and Resources Lily D’Ambrosio said.

The EES process for the wind farm included extensive technical studies prepared by the proponent and a public exhibition period that allowed the community to review additional material and provide feedback on the project.
The EES, public submissions and evidence presented during a 24-day public hearing was then considered by a joint Inquiry and Advisory Committee (IAC) while the community and experts were able to have their say through an independent review.
The Minister’s assessment was informed by the IAC’s report and concluded the project can go ahead. However, it is subject to further refinements and mitigation measures to ensure acceptable environmental outcomes.
These include stronger protections for endangered bird and bat species – including the potential removal of five turbines – and additional measures to manage landscape and visual impacts in specific locations.
