$71m Bruce Highway Upgrade works package awarded to Downer

A $71 million contract has been awarded to Downer by the Fulton Hogan - Seymour Whyte Joint Venture for works on the multi-million dollar Bruce Highway Upgrade between Caloundra Road and Sunshine Motorway in the Sunshine Coast, Queensland.

Scope of works included in the seal and asphalt works package awarded to Downer will comprise of major upgrades to interchanges as well as the expansion of an eight-kilometre section of the highway from four to six lanes. Downer will also be undertaking the construction of a service road that can accommodate local traffic west of the highway.

Downer’s Bli Bli facility is anticipated to supply more than 380,000 tonnes of asphalt for this project.

“The contract win is a testament to the experience and capabilities of Downer’s local crews and the modern high-capacity asphalt production facility at Bli Bli. These capabilities will enable Downer to meet the large production rates required by the customer, and to meet the high standards required by the Department of Transport and Main Roads in Queensland,” Downer Queensland Surfacing General Manager Evan Boone said.

This project - expected to be completed in 2020 - will help improve access to the region as well as deliver benefits to the local community, including improves safety and travel times.

The Bruce Highway Upgrade - Caloundra Road to Sunshine Motorway is an $812.95 million project that will reduce congestion and improve efficiency for motorists passing through the route.
