A major road maintenance blitz to repair, rebuild and resurface roads is now being rolled out across Victoria, and these works are backed by the State Government’s largest single-year investment in road maintenance.
The $976 million road maintenance blitz has been launched in Kyneton where crews will commence fixing potholes as well as upgrading road surfaces, which will progressively be delivered throughout the State.
As part of the Better Roads Blitz, crews will begin delivering hundreds of major road maintenance projects between now and mid-2026 – with about 70 per cent of all the funding going towards regional roads.
Thousands of projects on the State’s road network will be completed over the next nine months, with works ranging from road rehabilitation and resurfacing, patching potholes and maintaining bridges, installing traffic lights and signage.
“We’re investing nearly a billion dollars to rebuild and repair the roads that Victorians depend on every single day – from the highways connecting our major centres to the local roads that keep our communities moving.
“The last Liberal National Government cut roads maintenance funding and jobs – we’re getting on and delivering the biggest single-year investment in road maintenance in Victoria’s history,” Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne said.
“Whether it’s fixing potholes, resurfacing roads or improving safety, this blitz will deliver better and smoother journeys for drivers right across regional Victoria – keeping our communities connected,” Member for Macedon Mary-Anne Thomas said.
This blitz will target Victoria’s busiest travel and trade routes to help get millions of people as well as hundreds of thousands of tonnes of freight to and from their destination smoothly.
Key roads that will be targeted through this program of works include the Western Highway, Princes Highway East, Princes Highway West, Hume Highway and Calder Highway.
Meanwhile, the Mornington Peninsula Freeway, Leakes Road, Normanby Road, the Warburton Highway and Boronia Road will also be upgraded for smoother journeys in metropolitan areas.
These roads are being prioritised based on expert assessment and community feedback, ensuring that upgrades are focused where they are most needed.
In addition, crews will also mow, slash and spray tens of thousands of kilometres of roadsides, inspect and repair thousands of bridges and other structures.
Crews will also fix hundreds of sets of traffic lights and electronic signs, clean up graffiti and deliver other maintenance works as needed.
The $976 million Better Roads Blitz was announced as part of the Victorian Budget 2025/26.
