Adani to focus on local employment for $21.7bn Carmichael coal project

A final investment decision is about to be made by Adani for its $21.7 billion Carmichael coal project – located north of the Galilee Basin in Queensland. The company has also emphasised that it will prioritise sourcing regional suppliers as part of the project development.

The project is expected to generate hundreds of opportunities for local Queensland suppliers, workers and businesses.

As part of Adani’s efforts for local employment, the company will be launching an online supplier and jobs portal for the Carmichael project. The company is expecting that the online portal will open a direct link between suppliers, potential employees as well as procurement teams for the entire project.

“It’s important to us to communicate directly with the regional communities who will be impacted positively by this project, and an online portal is the simplest and best way to do it.

“This way, information about supply and employment opportunities will come effectively and directly from Adani or our Tier 1 contractors straight to the marketplace.

“Following this effective communication, enabling our potential regional suppliers is also important – Adani wants to invest in regional Queensland communities so they are fully equipped to take advantage of opportunities,” said Adani Australia’s Chief Executive Jeyakumar Janakaraj.

Jodie Currie, Bowen Basin Mining Club Director, has welcomed Adani’s focus on regional employment and procurement as part of the company’s bigger regional content strategy.

“It’s easy to talk the talk when it comes to regional content, but the benefits to regional Queensland really come when a company like Adani launches concrete initiatives to engage with communities, businesses and industry,” Mr Currie said.

Construction on the Carmichael coal project is expected to commence in the coming months after a final investment decision has been made by Adani.
