About $75 million is going to be spent to deliver upgrades on Wakehurst Parkway in New South Wales to help improve safety and traffic flow along the Northern Beaches road.
This funding commitment builds on the $18.1 million already provided to Northern Beaches Council for works to improve flood mitigation on Wakehurst Parkway.
The new investment will deliver upgrades on a 9.5-kilometre section of Wakehurst Parkway between Narrabeen to Frenchs Forest. Works will include localised widening as well as building additional turning lanes to help reduce crashes and improve the corridor’s efficiency.
“Sections of Wakehurst Parkway are some of the most dangerous black spots on the Northern Beaches, which is why we’re pressing ahead with our $75 million funding commitment.
“These works will help reduce crashes, improve access to Northern Beaches Hospital, and save commuters time by improving the overall efficiency of the wider road network,” Minister for Infrastructure Rod Stokes said.
Upgrades to Wakehurst Parkway are anticipated to deliver positive flow-on effects for the broader road network it is connected to.
Minister for Metropolitan Roads Natalie Ward said: “The works will improve traffic signals at the Dreadnought Road intersection, upgrade the Oxford Falls Road West intersection, improve southbound lane capacity on approach to Frenchs Forest, and improve safety at Elanora Road.
“Wakehurst Parkway is nestled within an incredible bushland setting so these important safety improvements will be designed and delivered to minimise impacts on the local environment and community, with updates every step of the way.”
According to Member for Wakehurst Brad Hazzard, the first round of consultation for the project is due to get underway in 2023.
“This is a key corridor for the Northern Beaches and these works will make the Wakehurst Parkway a safer and more reliable road,” Mr Hazzard said.
The New South Wales Government is also carrying out essential roadworks such as asphalting of a 2.8-kilometre section of the Wakehurst Parkway as part of the $147 million Greater Sydney State Roads Assets Restoration Program.
These works are going to be delivered between Judith Street and Aquatic Drive starting on 23 November 2022.
