Aurecon Jacobs Joint Venture win contract for WestConnex New M5 Project in Sydney

Aurecon Group and Jacobs Engineering Group are set to contribute to one of Australia's largest transport projects, following the announcement of the CPB Contractors Dragados Samsung Joint Venture (CPBDS-JV) as the successful contractor for the delivery of the WestConnex New M5 project in Sydney. Aurecon and Jacobs, in joint venture (AJJV), are the lead designers for the project.

Expressions of interest for contractors to design and construct the New M5 were called in September 2014 and a shortlist was announced in November 2014, with a request for tender issued shortly after. Tenders were received from three shortlisted consortia. In September 2015, the CPB Contractors Dragados Samsung Joint Venture was selected as the preferred tenderer for the New M5. 

The New M5, which is expected to double the capacity of the heavily congested M5 East motorway corridor, providing new twin tunnels 9 kilometres long between Kingsgrove and St Peters, is the largest section of the WestConnex project tendered to date.  It is being delivered by the CPB Contractors Dragados Samsung joint venture, with the Jacobs/Aurecon joint venture providing multi-disciplinary engineering design services.

Commenting on the announcement, Jacobs Senior Vice President Buildings and Infrastructure Patrick Hill said a core team of 75 staff from Jacobs had already been mobilized for the project. “We are very proud to be contributing to such a globally significant project, one that is set to have a positive impact on Sydney’s road network for many years to come.”

WestConnex New M5 Project

The New M5 is the second stage ofWestConnex and will run in twin tunnels between the existing M5 East atKingsgrove and new interchange at St Peters, providing improved east‐west corridor access between the SydneyCBD, Port Botany and Sydney Airport precincts and the South West growth areas.

With major work scheduled to commence in 2016, the construction scope includes the following:

  • New twin tunnels which will more than double capacity along the M5 East corridor and provide motorway access to north of Sydney Airport
  • A new interchange at an industrial site at St Peters, which reduces the impact on nearby residential areas
  • Connections from the interchange to key roads in the area, including Campbell Road/Street, Euston Road and across the canal to Bourke Road
  • Widening of Campbell Road/Street and Euston Road western tunnel entry and exit points at Kingsgrove.
