Australian Government to build $5bn Western Sydney Airport

After signing off on plans for the estimated $5 billion Western Sydney Airport at Badgerys Creek project late in 2016, the Australian Government has announced that it will be building, owning and operating the second Sydney airport.

“It is a vitally important project for western Sydney, for Sydney and the nation.

“The airport will be a major catalyst for jobs and economic growth in Western Sydney, injecting more than $1.9 billion into the economy during the construction phase alone. It is expected to deliver 9,000 new jobs to Western Sydney by the early 2030s, and 60,000 in the long-term,” Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said.

Further details for the multi-billion dollar project will be outlined in the Federal Budget which will be announced in the coming weeks.

New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian said that the State Government will do its best to help facilitate the construction of the Badgerys Creek airport by building roads around the new airport precinct as well as by securing the land needed for the future rail line.

“We’re excited by the project and I can’t wait for it to happen,” the Premier said.

Major construction works on Western Sydney Airport at Badgerys Creek are projected to commence in 2018, with completion expected by 2026.
