Barminco Limited has been awarded a three-year extension contract – valued at $236 million – for works on Western Area’s Forrestania Nickel Operations (FNO) in Western Australia.
The contract will cover mining services as well as diamond drilling at FNO’s Flying Fox and Spotted Quoll underground mines.
With this extension contract, Barminco will go past 15 years of service at Flying Fox. The company has also worked at the Spotted Quoll as a mining contractor for five years.
“Western Areas and Barminco have a joint stable and successful history at the Flying Fox and Spotter Quoll operations, and it is a pleasure to be able to again extend this contract on the back of the hard work, persistence and commitment to operational improvements our team has delivered.
“We look forward to continuing to support Western Areas in delivering consistent and reliable production metrics, and maintaining an outstanding safety record at both sites,” Barminco Chief Executive Officer Peter Stokes said.

In October 2018, Western Areas has green lighted the development of the Odysseus nickel mine in Western Australia. Now, the $299 million project moves forward with early capital works underway and post definitive feasibility studies (DFS) planning also in progress.
Following the completion of a definitive feasibility study (DFS), Western Areas has given the green light to the development of the Odysseus nickel mine, which is part of the Cosmos Nickel Complex located 30 kilometres north of Leinster, Western Australia.
Through the 2022-23 State Budget, the Western Australian Government is investing $9 billion towards major road projects and upgrades across the State over the next four years, including $3.4 billion for metropolitan road projects.
