A new major milestone has been reached on New South Wales’ Sydney Metro City and Southwest development with the awarding of a works contract for the new Barangaroo Station.

The $217 million contract has been awarded to BESIX Watpac and scope of works under this contract will include station fit out and construction of a new station entrance next to Nawi Cove.

Other works include delivery of pedestrian and cycling facilities, upgrades to surrounding roads such as Hickson Road as well as public domain works that include footpaths, tree planting, lighting and street furniture.

“Barangaroo Station is a landmark project for BESIX Watpac and a major milestone in our strategy to combine the best of our global expertise with our proven Australian experience.

“As a multi-disciplinary contractor specialising in complex projects, Barangaroo Station represents an ideal opportunity for us to showcase our capability and deliver a special result for Sydney Metro and the people of New South Wales,” BESIX Watpac CEO Jean-Pol Bouharmont said.

Excavation of the Barangaroo Station site has already been completed and station fit out works will commence in October of this year. Construction of the new station is expected to create up to 300 jobs at its peak.

“We have a great track record delivering complex projects in constrained environments in Sydney's CBD and the team can't wait to get down to work for Sydney Metro and deliver on our commitments to exceptional quality and safety,” BESIX Watpac General Manager New South Wales Peter Furlong said.

The new Barangaroo Station is due to be completed in 2023 before Sydney Metro City and Southwest open in 2024.

Once completed, the new station will improve access to the Walsh Bay Arts and Cultural precinct and it will also provide easier access to nearby residential, commercial and entertainment areas as well as the ferry hub. Barangaroo Station is expected to help relieve pressure from the Wynyard and Martin Place stations as well.

In addition, commuters will benefit from faster travel times to Barangaroo – 44 minutes from Rouse Hill, 26 minutes from Belmore, 24 minutes from Epping and just three minutes from Victoria Cross Station.
