BMD Constructions to deliver two major WA freeway upgrade projects

BMD Construction has secured contracts to deliver works on two freeways in Western Australia. The first contract is valued at $49.4 million to widen a section of the Mitchell Freeway and the second contract is valued at $48.4 million for widening works on the Kwinana Freeway.

On the Mitchell Freeway, BMD will be widening the southbound section from Cedric Street to Vincent Street. This project will provide approximately seven kilometres of additional lane, which will help relieve congestion along the route.

According to Transport Minister Rita Saffioti, the Mitchell Freeway carries up to 180,000 vehicles daily - which is some of the highest traffic volumes in Perth. The Minister added that this project will help keep traffic flowing on the Mitchell Freeway.

“The project works will include an additional lane for seven kilometres, reducing the need for merging bottlenecks and improving congestion and safety along this stretch of freeway,” Ms Saffioti said.

Construction on this section of the Mitchell Freeway is expected to commence soon and completed by the end of 2019.

The second major road contract that BMD has secured is for the construction of a third lane on an eight-kilometre section of the Kwinana Freeway northbound - between Russell Road and Roe Highway.

BMD will also be building noise walls along the eastern section of the freeway together with modifications to services barriers and drainage.

Once completed, this project will help reduce congestion and travel times for road users in Perth.

The State and Australian Governments have committed approximately $49 million towards the Kwinana Freeway northbound widening. Works on this project are expected to begin by mid-2018 and completed by the end of 2019.

Both the Mitchell Freeway widening project and the Kwinana Freeway widening project are part of the $2.3 billion WA Infrastructure Package that will support population growth as well as economic development in the region.
