Conergy – a global solar energy company – has chosen BMD Constructions as the major sub-contractor for the $42.5 million Lakeland Solar and Storage Project in Far North Queensland. This project near Mulligan Highway is the first large-scale integrated solar, storage and fringe-of-grid project in the Southern Hemisphere, which will feature a grid-to-islanding functionality.

BMD Constructions’ contract will include civil, mechanical and structural works throughout 60 hectares of land. Up to 50 people will be working on-site for a six-month period of construction and up to 10 workers will needed once the facility is fully operational.

“BMD will directly employ approximately 20 workers during the construction phase of the Lakeland Solar & Storage Project, some of whom will be local. We are also committed to helping up-skill the local workforce to provide an overall residual benefit and growth to the region,” said BMD Construction’s General Manager Paul Elliot.

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has committed $17.4 million to this project and this adds to the agency’s portfolio of fringe-of-grid projects which showcases how renewables can be an effective supply of energy to regional Australia.

“When operational, this project will produce enough electricity to power more than 3,000 homes and will connect one of Australia’s most remote National Electricity Market (NEM) connected substations,” said Conergy Managing Director David McCallum.

Construction is expected to begin next month and completed by April 2017.
