BMD Urban has been awarded the contract to revitalise key community infrastructure in North Queensland – Townsville’s popular dining precinct, Palmer Street.

This project will include widening footpaths on both sides of Palmer Street – from Dean Street to Plume Street – which will allow the expansion of outdoor dining spaces as well as improve wheelchair access and new garden spaces.

Once the upgrade is completed, a refreshed Palmer Street will be ready to welcome both domestic and international visitors arriving in Townsville for the Commonwealth Games’ preliminary basketball matches in April next year.

“The wider footpath will provide restaurants with more outdoor dining options for customers, while also improving the amenity for pedestrians and guests at palmer Street hotels.

“It complements the current upgrade work in the CBD and will provide a fresh welcome to guests coming to the city ahead of the Commonwealth Games events,” Infrastructure Committee Chair Cr Mark Molachino said.

The Queensland Government, through its Works for Queensland program, has provided $21.8 million to the Townsville City Council for the delivery of 57 projects, with the Palmer Street upgrade being one of them.

“The Palmer Street upgrade is receiving $2.4 million from the program and according to council, will support or create 12 local jobs,” Member for Townsville Scott Stewart said.

Works are set to commence early October 2017.
