An important milestone has been reached for the contract to design and build Western Australia’s new museum in Perth. The State Government entered into exclusive negotiations with Brookfield Multiplex who will be working with international architects, OMA and Hassell. The State Government has committed $428 million in capital funds for this redevelopment project.
According to Culture and Arts Minister John Day, the State was impressed by the response they have gotten from three shortlisted world-class associations.
Brookfield Multiplex has a broad experience in delivering major projects while OMA and its principal, Rem Koolhaas, have established a reputation for creating dramatic architecture. Hassell has also built a considerable reputation internationally.
“OMA has a vast portfolio of international projects including the expansion of Le Musée national des Beaux-arts du Québec, the Seattle Public Library and the China Central Television Building in Beijing. Hassell has completed many projects in China, but is best known to Australian audiences for projects like redevelopment of Melbourne’s Flinders Street Station and Sydney’s Darling Harbour.” – Minister John Day
As said by Treasurer Mike Nahan, after the approval of Brookfield Multiplex as the preferred respondent for this project, the State will be entering into exclusive negotiations in order to reach a final agreement on the design, construction and programming of the new museum.
“The State Government received eight responses to the original expression of interest and the three shortlisted consortia spent several months developing proposals and concepts to provide Western Australia with an exceptional museum for the 21st Century.” – Treasurer Mike Nahan
According to Treasurer Nahan, the contract for the project is expected to be awarded mid-year. The announcement will be accompanied by the revelation of the successful design for the museum.
Treasurer Mike Nahan also said that the State has approved a consortium led by Doric together with French architects Ateliers Jean Nouvel to be the reserve respondent in the event that negotiations with Brookfield Multiplex cannot be successfully concluded.
