Builder announced for Stage 4 of NSW's The Northern Road upgrade

Works on Stage 4 of the $1.6 billion upgrade on The Northern Road - between Mersey Road at Bringelly and Eaton Road at Luddenham - in Western Sydney is one step closer to commencing with the contract to deliver the project awarded to a joint venture between Ertech Pty Limited and Georgiou Group.

According to Federal minister for Urban Infrastructure and Cities Paul Fletcher, this upgrade project is a crucial piece to the development of the $5.3 billion Western Sydney Airport at Badgerys Creek.

“A 5.7-kilometre stretch of The Northern Road will be realigned and new access points to the site of the Western Sydney Airport will be built, ensuring the airport can be completed, as planned, in the mid-2020s.

“We want to ensure that Western Sydney can capitalise on the enormous economic benefits that this airport will bring, which is why we are investing $3.6 billion in the Western Sydney Infrastructure to build and upgrade roads around the new airport,” Mr Fletcher said.

New South Wales Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight Melinda Pavey said that this stage of the billion dollar project will provide better network capacity that will be able to meet future demands as well as provide improved infrastructure for cyclists and pedestrians.

“The widening of this section of The Northern Road to four lanes, with provision for six lanes in the future, will provide the capacity required to meet increasing demand and deliver more efficient and safer road networks in the area, as the population of Western Sydney continues to grow.

“The upgrade will also include new ‘bus-priority’ traffic signals at various intersections and shared pedestrian and cyclist pathways on the western side of the road,” Mrs Pavey said.

Works on Stage 4 of The Northern Road upgrade - between Mersey Road at Bringelly to Eaton Road at Luddenham - is expected to commence in October 2018 and is due for completion by early 2021.

Stage 4 is going to be divided into three sections, namely Mersey Road to Eaton Road; Eaton Road to Littlefields Road; and Littlefields Road to Glenmore Parkway.
