The Victorian Government is getting on with the delivery of much-needed upgrades to one of the busiest intersections in the west with the award of the construction contract for the Point Cook Road and Central Avenue Intersection Upgrade.

BMD Constructions has been announced as the preferred contractor to deliver the project that will reduce travel times, improve safety and provide walking and cycling connections.

The upgrade will include:

  • Removing the existing roundabout and replacing it with a new traffic light intersection to improve traffic flow on Point Cook Road, Central Avenue and for traffic coming off the Princes Freeway
  • Building a new outbound exit ramp that loops under Point Cook Road bridge and connects to the intersection, to reduce congestion and delays for vehicles travelling from the Princes Freeway to Point Cook Road, and improving access from the freeway to Central Avenue
  • Adding new lanes on Point Cook Road and Central Avenue, near the intersection
  • Adding pedestrian crossings and upgrading footpaths at the intersection

“Locals have told us they want safer, more reliable roads – and that’s exactly what this upgrade will deliver.

“With new traffic lights, pedestrian crossings and extra lanes, we’re improving traffic flow and making this intersection safer for everyone who uses it,” Minister for Transport Infrastructure Gabrielle Williams said.

This project will cater for Melbourne’s growing west by improving traffic flow as well as reducing travel times for about 28,000 daily road users.

The upgrade will also provide a significant boost to the local economy through the creation of approximately 550 new jobs, including 205 direct and 345 indirect jobs.

A site compound has been established on Central Avenue and this will serve as the base for construction activities.

Preliminary works are already underway and major construction on the Point Cook Road and Central Avenue Intersection Upgrade is due to commence in January 2026.

The project is expected to be completed in 2027, weather permitting.

“The Point Cook Road and Central Avenue Intersection Upgrade will help get locals home sooner and safer, including members of the community who choose to walk or cycle.

“This project isn’t just about improving travel – it’s about supporting local jobs and building a safer, more connected community,” Member for Point Cook Matthew Hilakari said.
