Construction will soon get underway on the $318 million Barwon Heads Road Upgrade Stage 2 project in Victoria following the appointment of two construction partners.

FCC Construction Australia and BildGroup will undertake the first part of the project that will ultmately extend Barwon Heads Road from Reserve Road in Charlemont to Lower Duneed Road in Connewarre.

The first section of Stage 2 will deliver additional new lanes along a 3.5-kilometre stretch between Reserve Road and Lake Road in Armstrong Creek.

The overall Barwon Heads Road Stage 2 upgrade will also include:

  • Upgrading intersections ar Warralily Boulevard, Central Boulevard and Precinct Road
  • Installation of new traffic lights ar Newport Drive and Boundary Road
  • Installation of new pedestrian crossings with traffic lights
  • Building new shared walking and cycling paths and dedicated on road cycling lanes
  • Installation of new street lighting, road signage, drainage and landscaping

The Australian Government committed an additonal $68.2 million towards this project in this year’s Federal Budget, bringing its total investment to $193 million. This significant funding injection will ensure full delivery of the project including the second section between Lake Road and Duneed Road.

“This important project needs to be delivered in its entirety for the Bellarine community and the many visitors who use it and the adjoining roads.

“Our additional commitment this year will ensure this happens and will mean the tousands of people who rely on Barwon Heads Road every day get to where they need to go sooner and safer,” Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King said.

Crews have been carrying out utility relocations and site office works over the past month to pave the way for major construction to begin.

This project is due to be completed in late 2028.

Stage 1 of the Barwon Heads Road Upgrade was completed in 2023 and motorists are now enjoying the benefits of the project, which duplicated four kilometres of the road and delivered four kilometres of new shared walking and cycling paths as well as dedicated on-road cycling lanes.

“Greater Geelong is one of the fastest-growing places in regional Victoria, which is why we’re delivering this vital project to improve journeys for the people who live and work here,” VIC Minister for Transport Infrastructure Gabrielle Williams said.

“THe Barwon Heads Road Upgrade will cut congestion for locals that depend on these roads every day,” Federal Member for Corangamite Libby Coker said.

“This project will improve safety across Charlemont and Armstrong Creek – creating better journeys for motorists,” State Member for Western Victoria Gayle Tierney said.
