CIMIC Group’s subsidiary company UGL has been selected as preferred engineering procurement and construction (EPC) contractor by Genex Power to deliver 270MW solar farm part of the Kidston Stage 2 works located in North Queensland.
Stage 2 of the Kidston Solar project is part of the overall Kidston project located on the Kidston Gold Mine site, located about 270km north-west of Townsville in North Queensland, Australia.
Stage 1 of the Kidston project is currently under construction by the joint venture between McConnell Dowell and Downer EDI which includes the co-located 250MW hydro pumped storage project.
In addition, UGL also carried out the EPC and operation and maintenance services contract for the first phase of the Kidston project.
Contract execution is expected in the coming months, with revenue for UGL to be finalised at this time.
An exclusive Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) has been signed by UGL and Genex and involves jointly working together to accelerate project development, complete final design optimisation and reduce cost through value engineering and risk workshops.

According to UGL Managing Director Jason Spears, UGL has a proven track record in the design and delivery of solar farms after partnering with Genex to deliver the first Kidston solar project.
“Partnering with Genex to deliver the first Kidston solar project demonstrates UGL’s in-house engineering capability, innovative construction techniques, and ability to provide a fully wrapped EPC solution – all of which we will apply to the Kidston stage two solar project,” said Spears.
“Our end to end capabilities, strong supply chain and technical expertise in linking renewable generation assets to the electricity grid sets us apart and makes UGL a valuable partner to our clients.”
Currently five solar projects have been delivered by UGL and an additional five are under construction including Emu Downs in Western Australia, Kidston Stage One and Collinsville in Queensland, White Rock in New South Wales and Bannerton in Victoria.
