Another major Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport works contract has been awarded. This follows the awarding of a $1.8 billion Station Boxes and Tunnelling Works contract in December 2021.

The new contract for surface and civil alignment works is valued at $538.5 million and it has been awarded to the joint venture between CIMIC Group company CPB Contractors and United Infrastructure – a consortium comprised of Burton Contractors, JK Williams and Mulgoa Quarries.

“We are proud to be part of delivering this important transport infrastructure for Western Sydney, and its contribution to the area’s growth. The airport and associated transport projects are central to Sydney’s economic future, and we’ll be ensuring that local communities benefit through the creation of employment and supplier opportunities,” CIMIC Group Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Juan Santamaria said.

The more than half-a-billion-dollar contract will deliver:

  • 3.4 kilometres of elevated viaduct at Orchard Hills and Luddenham
  • 6.7 kilometres of earthworks for track formation
  • A 190 metre long rail bridge over the new M12 motorway
  • A 20 metre long rail bridge within the airport
  • Temporary and permanent access roads
  • Bulk earthworks for the stabling and maintenance facility site

“CPB Contractors is pleased to have another opportunity to work with Sydney Metro and to work closely with the local companies that make up United Infrastructure in delivering new infrastructure in Western Sydney. Our team will leverage all its experience to ensure that these works are delivered safely and to schedule,” CPB Contractors Managing Director Jason Spears said.

Works under this contract will commence this year and are due to be completed in 2024.

About 20 per cent of the workforce for this project is going to be sourced from Greater Western Sydney.

The Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport development will deliver a new metro rail that will connect communities with the new Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport as well as the growing region surrounding it.

The 23-kilometre railway will provide residential areas a vital link to employment hubs, such as the new Aerotropolis, in addition to providing travellers a connection from the new airport to the rest of Sydney’s public transport system.

The Western Sydney Airport line will include six new stations at:

  • St Marys, interchanging with the existing suburban railway station and connecting customers with the rest of Sydney’s rail system
  • Orchard Hills, to service a future commercial and mixed-use precinct
  • Luddenham, to service a future education, innovation and commercial precinct
  • Two stations with the airport site – at the airport terminal and at the airport business park
  • The commercial heart of the Western Sydney Aerotropolis – proposed to be named Bradfield

The entire Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport project is anticipated to support over 14,000 jobs during its construction, providing a significant boost to the New South Wales and national economies.
