Rio Tinto has awarded Civmec Limited a new contract for works at the Mesa A iron ore operations – as part of the Robe Valley Sustaining (RVS) iron ore project – in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.
This new contract award, together with other recent maintenance work orders from Rio Tinto, have a combined value of approximately $165 million.
“Rio Tinto has always been a good client for us and we have a long history of supporting the safe, high quality and timely delivery of their projects in Western Australia and Queensland, across construction, manufacturing and maintenance. We are very pleased to have secured this opportunity to partner with them again,” Civmec Chief Executive Officer Patrick Tallon said.
Under this new contract award, Civmec will undertake the supply, fabrication, modularisation, transportation to site as well as erection, modification, installation, and commissioning of structural, mechanical, piping, electrical and instrumentation, and communication work for the wet plant at Mesa A.
Components included in this package of works will comprise of screening, surge bin and scrubbing facilities and associated conveyor systems, transfer towers, sub stations and all piping and cabling which also includes trenching for underground services.
Fabrication is going to be undertaken at Civmec’s Henderson facility and will require about 200 people to deliver the works, which is anticipated to commence in the coming weeks.
Structural, mechanical and piping works on site will see up to 240 workers mobilising to the project location at peak construction later this year, while about 100 workers are going to be required in early 2021 to undertake electrical works.
The Robe Valley Sustaining iron ore project includes the development of three new deposits as well as the construction of supporting infrastructure needed for the operations of the Mesa A and Mesa J hubs.
