Community feedback sought for proposed West Tamar Highway upgrades

Community feedback is being sought by the Tasmanian Government on the proposed upgrades to the West Tamar Highway between Trevallyn and Riverside. 

This upgrade is jointly funded by the Australian and Tasmanian Governments as part of a $36 million investment to upgrade the West Tamar Highway Targeted Upgrades between Exeter and Launceston. 

Six priority sites have been identified to enhance safety, improve traffic flow and ensure this key transport link meets the community’s future needs. 

“The West Tamar Highway is one of the busiest commuter routes in northern Tasmania, and these upgrades will make it safer and more efficient for everyone who uses it. 

“We want to hear directly from the community to ensure the designs meet local needs and support future growth in the area. 

“The proposed improvements, from safer intersections to new pedestrian facilities, are about making it easier and safer for all road users, whether you’re driving, walking or cycling,” Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Kerry Vincent said.

The proposed designs for this West Tamar Highway upgrade include: 

• A new pedestrian crossing with traffic lights at Brownfield Lane 

• Improvements to the pedestrian access at Allawah Street (Launceston bound) 

• Improvements to the intersection, traffic light phasing and pedestrian crossing facilities at Ecclestone Road and Windsor Drive 

• New traffic lights and the addition of a pedestrian crossing at the Forest Road (south) intersection 

• Improvements to the turning facility with the addition of a U-turn lane at Riverview Road 

• Building a shared use path from Tailrace Park to the Windsor Community Precinct 

Members of the community can provide their feedback on the designs online through the Transport Tasmania website until 30 November 2025. 

The designs can also be viewed at the West Tamar Council Riverside office at 2-4 Eden Street, Riverside as well as the City of Launceston office at 19-28 St John Street, Launceston during business hours Monday to Friday throughout the consultation period.
