The $165 million Tiger Brennan Drive and Berrimah Road overpass project is progressing well towards completion, with 60 per cent of works completed.
Extensive works were carried out to build the new lanes for Tiger Brennan Drive, the Berrimah Road overpass structure, and the high fill embankments.
“This landmark road project will make the daily commute for 20,000 Territorians a whole lot safer.
“Our Government’s continued strong investment in new infrastructure projects will see support for local businesses across a number of industries meaning more work and jobs for Territorians,” Northern Territory Chief Minister Eva Lawler said.
The new Tiger Brennan Drive carriageways and tie-in to the existing road are due to be completed in the coming months.
Upcoming works on the project will include earthworks for embankments and the construction of retaining walls on Berrimah Road, south of the existing Tiger Brennan Drive.
In addition, new on and off ramps will be progressively built and be ready to open to traffic.
“This project will be a boon for the nearly 20,000 vehicles travelling on Tiger Brennan Drive daily, easing congestion – particularly in busy peak periods.
“The new overpass will carry Berrimah Road traffic over Tiger Brennan Drive, separating the major flow of traffic on Tiger Brennan Drive from traffic on Berrimah Road, enabling a continuous, safer flow of traffic,” Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King said.
The Tiger Brennan Drive and Berrimah Road overpass project is jointly funded by the Australian and Northern Territory governments.
Once completed, the project will improve safety, reduce traffic delays during peak hours and increase traffic flow for freight connectivity.
“This project is also good news for jobs and investment here in the Northern Territory, with the project being delivered by local company, Sitzler, and supported by a host of local subcontractors and suppliers.
“As well as improving safety by separating opposing traffic, the project will also provide an economic boost by improving traffic flow and connectivity for freight road trains heading to East Arm Wharf,” NT Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics Joel Bowden said.
Traffic will be progressively transitioned on to the new alignment of Tiger Brennan Drive once the bridge is completed and safe to allow vehicles to pass underneath.
Subject to inclement weather, traffic is expected to be switched to the new alignment in April 2024 and the overall project is anticipated to be completed by the end of this year.

“From Tiger Brennan Drive to the Tanami, the Albanese Labor Government is ensuring our region has the funding it needs and deserves to improve roads and infrastructure – the importance of which cannot be understated, especially for Territory lives.
“This project will also significantly ease congestion, fulfilling a long-awaited need within our community and signalling a positive step forward in our infrastructure development,” Federal Member for Solomon Luke Gosling said.
