Construction begins on new George Town Indoor Aquatic, Health & Wellbeing Centre

Construction is now underway on Tasmania’s new George Town Indoor Aquatic, Health and Wellbeing Centre. 

This project is jointly funded by the Australian and Tasmanian Governments, each contributing $15 million and $2.5 million respectively. 

“This exciting transformation of the George Town Aquatic Centre is now underway. 

“It will mean year-round swimming, a new gym and health and wellbeing services. 

“This $15 million investment is about building strong, healthy communities, and it’s fantastic to see this project now moving from a plan to a reality,” Federal Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Catherine King said. 

“The Tasmanian Government is proud to contribute $2.5 million to this fantastic project that will deliver tangible outcomes to improve the lives of Tasmanians, both now and for future generations. 

“We are committed to building a healthier and more active Tasmania. This funding is part of the government’s broader commitment to support sport and active recreation across the state. 

“This new centre will provide a modern, inclusive space for the George Town community to come together, get active, and enjoy the benefits of recreation all year round,” TAS Minister for Sport Nick Duigan said.

The new state-of-the-art facility will feature a heated indoor 25-metre pool with room for lap swimming, lessons and recreation alongside a warm-water program pool, a gymnasium and fitness room, allied health suites and a cafe. 

Other features of the new facility include accessible change rooms and amenities, lockers, and administrative spaces such as reception, a first aid room, an office and storage. 

“This new centre will provide a much-needed boost to the region, creating jobs during construction and delivering year-round health benefits for decades to come. Having a heated accessible indoor pool will make a real difference for local families, older residents and anyone wanting to stay active and healthy through the colder months. 

“Importantly, delivering on our 2022 election commitment will support inclusive access to health and wellbeing activities for the community, giving them a space to get together, chat and have fun,” Federal Member for Bass Jess Teesdale said.

The delivery of the new George Town Indoor Aquatic, Health and Wellbeing Centre will ensure year-round, all-weather access to several amenities and services for residents of all ages and abilities. 

The new facility will replace the existing outdoor 25-metre pool that only operates during the warmer months of October to March. 

The centre is the culmination of a multi-year effort that began with George Town Council’s 2021 Sport and Recreation Strategy, and it is also based on extensive community feedback. 

“This project marks an exciting milestone for our community. 

It represents a once-in-a-generation investment in the health, wellbeing, and lifestyle of our residents, providing modern spaces for recreation, rehabilitation, and connection. 

“Importantly this will provide our residents with the opportunity to use the facilities throughout the entire year and allow for equity of access to those that are otherwise unable to use other outlying facilities due to transport, travel and time constraints. 

“On behalf of the council, I thank the community for their ongoing support and enthusiasm. 

“We are getting on with the job of delivering a modern indoor facility that will serve our community and broader region for another 40 years, creating better health outcomes all year round. 

“We look forward to sharing updates as construction progresses and we move closer to opening the doors to this much-anticipated facility,” George Town Council Mayor Greg Kieser said.
