John Holland is ready to begin construction on Australia’s first dedicated cardiac facility - the Victorian Heart Hospital - located within Monash University’s Clayton campus in Melbourne’s south-east, with the final contracts already signed.
“This state-of-the-art facility will lead the way in caring for heart patients, bringing together treatment, medical research and training under one roof.

Once the Victorian Heart Hospital is completed, it will be able to perform up to 2,150 cardiac surgeries as well as 13,000 cardiac laboratory procedures annually. The new dedicated hospital will also be able to accommodate 28,300 cardiac emergency presentations and 108,000 consultations.
The hospital’s design is drawn from the principles of biophilic design which will incorporate light-filled interiors and a strong connection to outdoor spaces to help promote wellbeing and healing.
To minimise the building’s environmental impact, it will utilise natural climate conditions in order to enable resilient and energy-efficient heating and cooling systems. In addition, locally-sourced materials will be used to build the new facility to reduce its carbon footprint.
“This hospital will raise the bar for patient-centred design in Australian hospital construction, and we couldn’t be more excited to start working on this life-saving facility,” John Holland Executive General Manager - Building David Lehmann said.
Early works will be commencing in the coming months, with the Victorian Heart Hospital due for completion in late 2022.
Construction of the new cardiac facility is anticipated to create more than 1,700 jobs.
