Construction is now underway on a new $163 million dual-branded hotel at Melbourne Airport which is set to provide more accommodation options to the growing number of travellers in and around the airport.

The new 464-room hotel is going to be just a few steps away from Terminal 4 that is located within a new precinct known as ‘The Hive’.

“It is really exciting to bring such a great new hotel concept to one of the great travel destinations in Australia - Melbourne, giving travellers more choice and amenity.

“We believe this new development will bring a much needed social hub to our space bringing visitors and business colleagues together on the doorstep of the airport with access to more than 650 flights per day,” Melbourne Airport Chief of Property Linc Horton said.

The Novotel and ibis Styles-branded 10-storey hotel will feature guests gym and pool facilities, a cafe, bar and restaurant as well as conference rooms.

This project is anticipated to create 450 jobs during construction and about 120 jobs once the hotel is up and running.

“We are excited to be working with Melbourne Airport on this significant development and thrilled to be embarking on another dual-branded hotel complex with our internationally recognised Novotel and ibis Styles brands. This newest member of the Accor Group is a vibrant airport precinct development, which captures the essence of Melbourne through its interiors and warm welcome to guests,” Accor Pacific Chief Operating Officer Pacific Simon McGrath said.

The new hotel is going to be the first development to be built as part of  the airport’s The Hive precinct - which will also feature a childcare facility and office spaces ranging between 1,000 to 10,000-SQM that can cater to the needs of the 20,000 airport workforce.

For this project, Melbourne Airport has engaged Built as the contractor to deliver the new hotel.

“This project is well suited to our combined hotel and airport experience in Victoria and nationally. To ensure the project runs smoothly we are deploying advanced virtual design and construction technology that will allow us to identify and avoid issues early in the construction process through virtual modelling,” Built Director VIC & SA Ross Walker said.

The Novotel and ibis Styles’ brand hotel is expected to open in 2021.
