Construction is underway on Colac’s $19.3 million water supply pipeline project – which will connect Colac to the Geelong system, giving residents and irrigators a secure water supply.
Currently, Colac’s water is sourced from the West Gellibrand and Olangolah reservoirs. A new off-take from the Wurdee Boluc channel is going to be constructed as part of this project as well as a new 50 million litre storage basin and pump station at the treatment plant in Gerangamete.
"This project not only benefits the local Colac economy, it'll give the region the water security it needs into the future to protect its communities," said Minister for Water Lisa Neville.
The construction on an 11-kilometre pipeline will run from the treatment plant all the way to the existing Colac supply pipeline. This upgrade project will allow the city to access water from Forrest’s West Barwon Reservoir as well as the Barwon Downs borefield when needed.
Local Colac businesses are being involved in the project including R Slater & Sons, BDH Constructions and Armistead Earthmoving.
"The new pipeline will diversify Colac's water supply network, ensuring we manage supplies to support the city's liveability and economic growth," said Barwon Water Managing Director Joe Adamski.
Construction is expected to be completed by mid-2017 and it will effectively double the city’s supply capacity.
