Consultation begins for TAS Arthur Highway upgrades from Sorell to Port Arthur
Feedback from the community is being sought on the proposed designs for the future Arthur Highway upgrades from Sorell to Port Arthur in Tasmania.
This project is jointly funded by the Australian and Tasmanian Governments, each contributing $200 million and $50 million respectively.
The proposed improvements include building additional overtaking lanes at Dunalley, Taranna and Forcett, intersection upgrades at Forcett and Eaglehawk Neck, and improved pedestrian access in Dunalley.
"From the school run and the daily commute to the thousands of visitors exploring south-east Tasmania, the Arthur Highway is an important part of everyday life in this region.
"The Albanese Government's $200 million investment in the Arthur Highway will deliver safer, better journeys for locals and visitors, while supporting the communities and businesses that rely on this important road.
"This is a significant investment in the future of the Arthur Highway, and I encourage the community to get involved and have their say on the proposed design, your local knowledge matters," Federal Member for Lyons Rebecca White said.

Designs are under development for seven high-priority projects identified in the Arthur Highway Road Improvement Strategy that was released in April 2025. This includes:
- Forcett towards Sorell – overtaking lane
- Sugarloaf Road – junction improvement
- Dunalley towards Copping – overtaking lane
- Dunalley to Bay Road shared pathway and Bay Road junction improvements
- Dunalley towards Murdunna – overtaking lane
- Pirates Bay Drive – junction improvement
- Taranna towards Port Arthur – overtaking lane
Community consultation is now underway and will end on 25 September 2026. During this time, community members and stakeholders will have the opportunity to review the proposed design as well as provide feedback on the planned upgrades along the Arthur Highway.
Designs can be viewed online or in-person at Sorell Council offices (47 Cole Street, Sorell) and Tasman Council offices (1713 Main Road, Nubeena). Feedback can be submitted by email to arthur-highway@building.tas.gov.au or by completing a form at the two display locations.
"As a gateway to some of Southern Tasmania's most beautiful and historic attractions, the Arthur Highway is a vital transport link for residents, businesses and our state's visitors.
"We are excited to release proposed designs for improvements to the Arthur Highway, which will improve safety, efficiency and reliability along the corridor, while supporting future growth and ensuring the highway continues to meet the needs of all road users.
"We encourage the community to review and have their say on the designs, with feedback playing an important role in the next stage of planning and design for each project," TAS Infrastructure and Transport Minister Kerry Vincent said.
