Consultation on the removal of the dangerous and congested Hudson Road level crossing in Spotswood, and the Victorian Government is encouraging the community to have their say on the project plans.

A new rail bridge will be built to replace the level crossing, and this will help improve safety as well as ease traffic congestion in the area.

Expert assessments have confirmed that a new rail bridge is the best solution for this area as it will avoid the need for land acquisition and relocation of underground services. This option will also enable the project to be delivered faster and with minimal disruption for locals.

In addition, a brand-new Spotswood Station will also be constructed, and it will feature modern facilities such as improved lighting, CCTV, lifts and stairs to make the station safer, more accessible and easier to use.

Elevating the rail line and station will help unlock opportunities for new open spaces, better walking and cycling connections as well as more trees and greenery along the corridor.

By removing the Hudson Road level crossing, it will improve safety and reduce congestion for thousands of motorists that get stuck at the boom gates – which are down for over 50 minutes in the morning peak when about 50 trains pass through.

“We’re investing in Melbourne’s west to deliver safer, faster and more reliable transport options.

“Getting rid of the Hudson Road level crossing and building a new Spotswood Station will change the way locals live, work and travel for generations to come,” Minister for Transport Infrastructure Gabrielle Williams said.

Once the West Gate Tunnel opens, local roads will also become safer with a 24-hour truck ban to be introduced on Hudson Road between Melbourne Road and Booker Street.

The Werribee Line is on track to being level crossing-free by 2030, with works already underway to remove the level crossings at Champion and Maddox roads in Newport as well as Maidstone Street in Altona.

The Victorian Government is removing 110 dangerous and congested level crossings across Melbourne by 2030, with 87 already gone for good.

“The removal of the level crossing and banning trucks on Hudson Road when the West Gate Tunnel Project opens, will transform Spotswood.

“I’d encourage everyone to have their say on the new station precinct and help shape the future of Spotswood,” Member for Williamstown Melissa Horne said.
