Contract awarded for $100m Flinders Street Station Restoration

Australian construction company Built Pty Ltd has been awarded the contract to refurbish the historic Flinders Street Station. Described as "the heart of the city's train network", Premier Daniel Andrews joined Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan today to announce the delivery of the $100 million project. 

Works on the 100 year-old building will begin in the coming weeks and yhe entire project is expected to be complete in 2018, creating around 150 jobs.

Heritage Works

The heritage works to be undertaken include:

• repairing and restoring the façade and roof
• making the building structurally sound
• making the building watertight
• conserving and stabilising the building structure
• restoring the heritage clock tower and heritage elements
• repainting the building, consistent with heritage requirements.

Passenger Improvement Works

Works to improve the station for passengers include:

• extending the concourse along Swanston Street, with new entrances at the western end of the station near Elizabeth Street, and in the Degraves Subway
• redesigning the main entrance on the corner of Swanston Street
• improving access to the station precinct and between platforms, including addressing growing pedestrian congestion issues at the west end of the station
• installing myki next generation equipment and additional myki readers
• upgrading lighting and new passenger information displays
• rebuilding toilet facilities
• revamping ticket offices at the Flinders Street and Elizabeth Street entrances
• installing a giant timetabling board facing Federation Square and the tram interchange.
