Contractor appointed to deliver $253m WA Bayswater Station project

A new Bayswater Station in Western Australia is one step closer to being built with the appointment of a preferred contractor to design and construct the future METRONET train station. 

Evolve Bayswater Alliance (Coleman Rail) has been chosen to deliver the $253 million Bayswater Station project, following a thorough tender evaluation process. 

The new station at Bayswater will be part of a major transport hub that connects the Midland Line to METRONET’s upcoming Forrestfield-Airport Link as well as the Morley-Ellebrook Line and key cycling routes. 

“Bayswater is on track to becoming one of Perth’s best connected communities, with access to three rail lines and many bus services. 

“This exciting METRONET project will allow us to build a better public transport network that links Perth with growing outer suburbs like Ellenbrook and Forrestfield,” Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said. 

The Bayswater Station project is expected to support more than 350 jobs. 

This project is just one of several major infrastructure projects in the State – either in the pipeline or under construction – that will aid in Western Australia’s economic recovery from the current COVID-19 pandemic. 

“Building this project, combined with construction of other nearby major projects like the Tonkin Gap and Morley-Ellenbrook Line, will help support the WA economy through some tough times ahead. 

“In times like these it’s important we continue to progress the projects that will provide work for local businesses and keep workers in their jobs. This will ultimately support the State’s wider economy,” Minister Saffioti said.

This project will include: 

• Construction of a new four-platform station, with passenger amenities and long enough to accommodate six-car trains, on a higher rail bridge over King Willian-Coode streets 
• Building an elevated Principal Shared Path along the Whatley Crescent side of the rail bridge 
• Additional rail infrastructure between Bayswater and Meltham stations 
• Upgrading the pedestrian underpass at Leake Street 
• Whatley Crescent-Beechboro Road South connection under the railway, and surrounding road works – including reconfiguring the King William Street-Whatley Crescent intersection and reducing Whatley Crescent to two lanes (one in each direction) through the town centre 
• Hamilton Street public space that follows the area’s natural geography for pedestrian connections from a lowered Whatley Crescent to Hamilton Street 
• Removing Coode Street-Railway Parade signalised intersection and reconfiguring the King William Street-Whatley Crescent intersection to introduce pedestrian priorities 
• Two station entrances to reduce passengers crossing roads and provide alternative emergency exits 
• Integrating bus services with the local road network without requiring buses to turn in residential streets or operate from a large bus interchange within the town centre 
• Additional parking at Meltham and Ashfield stations 

“Along with the community of Bayswater, I’m pleased to see this important project continue to progress – a bright light in a challenging time. 

“Bayswater Station is more than just a public transport project – the wider Bayswater community will also benefit with new public spaces and more pedestrian-friendly streets around the station,” Maylands MLA Lisa Baker said. 

The project will also deliver a rail turnback west of the new station, which is required for the operation of the Forrestfield-Airport Link. 

To minimise the impacts to commuters and the local community, the first island platform – with a track on each side – is going to be constructed while the current line and station continues operations. 

Once the new platforms are completed, trains will begin using them to allow for the removal of the old station as well as the construction of a second island platform that will accommodate the Morley-Ellenbrook Line. 

Early works on the Bayswater Station project commenced last year and it included relocating the City of Bayswater’s iconic 80-year-old Kurrajong tree to Bert Wright Park. Other works include relocating the main cable route and construction of additional passenger parking at Meltham and Ashfield stations, which will be utilised during construction. 

The Evolve Bayswater Alliance will work closely with the public Transport Authority to finalise the detailed design for the project, with major construction works anticipated to begin once the contract has been signed.
