Further upgrades to the Cox Peninsula Road in the Northern Territory will soon get underway, and the Territory Government has awarded ADG Engineers Darwin a $330,000 contract to undertake the project’s design.

As the Cox Peninsula Road sees an increase in volume of heavy vehicles using this route, the design of the upgrade will focus on strengthening and widening the road between Litchfield Park Road intersection and Fog Bay Road intersection.

“Territory Labor is ensuring the Territory’s road infrastructure is safe and fit for purpose, ensuring Territorians have access to safe and better roads.

“With around 5,000 vehicles travelling this major arterial road, including heavy vehicles, local residents and visitor vehicles, the design of these upgrades will help ensure we have a road that can withstand the heavy use and also make it safer for motorists.

“Improving our transport infrastructure not only makes our roads safer but creates work for Territorians,” Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics Joel Bowden said.

The project will deliver a new three-kilometre passing lane and tie-ins to the intersection, with construction expected to begin in the 2025 dry season following a public tender process for a construction partner.

The Cox Peninsula Road is a major arterial road that is currently a single carriageway dual lane sealed road with narrow lanes and shoulders, and pavement strengthening, widening and construction of a new passing lane will make this road safer for all road users.

“This project will be welcomed by the local community that travel on the Cox Peninsula Road on a daily basis.

“As the region continues to have significant growth and a burgeoning tourism sector having a secure road infrastructure will ensure ongoing access and safety for travellers,” Member for Daly Dheran Young said.

Upgrades are currently being carried out on the Cox Peninsula and Southport Road intersection to improve safety and traffic flow. Works include widening of Cox Peninsula Road to accommodate dedicated left and right turning lanes onto Southport Road. This upgrade is due to be completed by July 2024.

The Cox Peninsula Road upgrade projects are jointly funded by the Northern Territory and Australian Governments under the $45 million Road Safety Program Tranche 4 and 5, with total funding for both projects is $6.45 million.
