CPB Contractors-UGL JV wins $1.376bn Sydney Metro contract

Two CIMIC Group companies - CPB Contractors and UGL Limited - have been awarded a $1.376 billion contract by the New South Wales Government to deliver works on the Sydney Metro project.

“We’re currently digging twin new metro tunnels between Chatswood and Sydenham - this is the contract that will turn these tunnels into a working railway.

“This major investment extends metro rail from Sydney’s booming north west, delivering a new 66 kilometre railway for Sydney 2024,” Transport and Infrastructure Minister Andrew Constance said.

This package of works is the seventh contract to be awarded for the Sydney Metro City & Southwest project. The Line-wide works package awarded to the joint venture will include:

  • 31 kilometres of underground railway track to be laid in the twin railway tunnels from Chatswood to Sydenham

  • 31 kilometres of overhead power equipment and 11 new substations to power the metro from Chatswood to Bankstown

  • Installation of over 350 kilometres of high-voltage, low-voltage and tunnel service cabling

  • Connecting the railway tracks from the end of Sydney Metro at Chatswood to the new tracks into the city

  • The expansion of the Sydney Metro Trains Facility at Rouse Hill to accommodate 37 new trains for Sydney Metro City & Southwest

  • The construction of the Sydney Metro Trains Facility - South at Marrickville

  • Installation of tunnel equipment such as ventilation, drainage and emergency evacuation and monitoring equipment as well as the fit out of the tunnel ventilation and high-voltage equipment in the seven new underground stations

“This new work at Sydney Metro aligns well with CIMIC Group’s unique offering as an integrated rail solutions provider. The project combines the proven rail-sector enterprise within our construction company CPB Contractors and our asset solutions provider UGL to deliver an end-to-end result, covering design, construction and commissioning of the project,” CIMIC Group Chief Executive Officer Michael Wright said.

Works on this package of works is anticipated to commence this year, with construction expected to be completed in 2024.

The Sydney Metro project is Australia’s largest public transport project, and it is set to expand the future metro railway into the CBD as well as to Bankstown. The entire development is expected to be valued between $11.5 billion and $12.5 billion.
