Victorian drivers will soon experience reduced congestion and safer travels along the M80 Ring Road, with upgrades set to commence following the award of the design and construction contract - valued at $331 million - to CIMIC Group company CPB Contractors.

“We’ll bring local knowledge and industry-leading experience to deliver this upgrade with the least disruption possible, and with a commitment to meet and exceed important government policies such as Local Jobs First and the Social Procurement Framework,” CPB Contractors Managing Director Juan Santamaria said.

The contractor will deliver a number of works including construction of new lanes; entry and exit ramps; structural works; and a smart freeway management system that will help boost capacity and improve safety on the M80 Ring Road between Sydney Road and Edgars Road. Street lighting, traffic barriers, noise walls and landscaping will also be installed as part of this project.

“This $518 million investment to upgrade the 4-kilometre section between Sydney Road and Edgars Road will be a state-shaping project.

“This is the fifth section of the ring road to be undertaken, ringing the M80 one step closer to the completion of a full upgrade,” Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said.

The works included in this multi-million dollar project will help get Victorians home sooner and safer.

“This upgrade will add new lanes, boost capacity, bust congestion, and remove dangerous weaving by traffic at entry and exit points to make the M80 Ring Road safer and more efficient.

“The upgrades to the M80 will remove bottlenecks in Melbourne’s growing northern suburbs and bring relief to thousands of drivers each day, providing better access to local and arterial roads,” Federal Minister for Population, Cities and Urban Infrastructure Alan Tudge said.

The smart freeway management system to be installed will feature overhead electronic signs that will provide real time travel information as well as help with traffic flow management. It will also include overhead variable speed limits and ramp signals that will manage access to the Ring Road.

Construction on this project is anticipated to begin in early 2020 and is due to be completed by early 2023.

The M80 Ring Road project is being delivered by Major Road Projects Victoria, with the Australian and Victorian Governments jointly investing $1 billion towards its delivery.

The upgraded M80 Ring Road is set to provide motorists with more reliable connections to major freeways and interstate connections - including the Hume Highway, the future North East Link, the Princes Freeway, the West Gate Freeway and the future West Gate Tunnel.
