CPB, UGL and Ghella secures contract to deliver $2.5bn NSW M6 Stage 1

New South Wales’ $2.5 billion M6 Stage 1 project has reached a new major milestone with the awarding of the design and construction contract to the joint venture between CIMIC Group's CPB Contractors and UGL, and Ghella. 

This contract award will generate the two CIMIC Group companies approximately $1.95 billion in revenue. 

“This is an important addition to the portfolio of road, rail and airport projects that CPB Contractors’ experienced teams are delivering across NSW. We are very pleased to have been selected to work closely with Transport for NSW to safely deliver this key piece of transport infrastructure for the people of Sydney,” CPB Contractors Managing Director Jason Spears said.

The joint venture will undertake the delivery of the underground link between President Avenue, Kogarah and the M8; mainline tunnels; exit and entry ramps; shared pedestrian and cycle paths; and tunnel stubs for future stages of the M6 project which are still subject for relevant approvals. 

Construction is anticipated to commence in 2022 and Stage 1 completed in 2025. 

The M6 Stage 1 project will include: 

• Twin 4-kilometre tunnels linking the M8 Motorway at Arncliffe to President Avenue at Kogarah 
• Ramps between the main motorway tunnel and the surface intersection at President Avenue 
• Tunnel stubs for a future connection south to extend the M6 
• A new intersection at President Avenue including the widening and raising of President Avenue at this location 
• Provision of new shared cyclist and pedestrian pathways connecting Bestic Street, Brighton Le Sands 
• Motorway support infrastructure including tunnel ventilation systems and the motorway control centre 
• New service utilities including a permanent power supply line 
• Minor adjustments to local roads in the project area 

Once completed, Stage 1 will fill the missing link between Sydney's south and the wider Sydney motorway network – providing easier, faster and safer journeys. The M6 Stage 1 project will also help remove over 2,000 trucks from surface roads daily and return local streets to local communities. 

This project is expected to support and create up to 5,300 jobs.
